Political figures mostly on the right have speculated since the start of Joe Biden’s presidential campaign that if Democrats ended up picking him over his campaign rivals, it would be in order to use the 77-year-old career politician as a conduit for all their far-left progressive fantasies like the Green New Deal and single-payer healthcare.
Biden and his campaign have at times lent credence to such talk.
At one point last year after a series of gaffes – which led to questions about his age and health, reports swirled that Biden was considering serving only one term if elected. Top advisers said at the time it was the candidate’s way of trying to assure younger and even more progressive Democratic icons like The Squad that he could be used as sort of a “transitional figure” for the next generation of leaders, starting with whoever his eventual vice presidential nominee would be:
“This makes Biden a good transition figure,” the adviser said. “I’d love to have an election this year for the next generation of leaders, but if I have to wait four years [in order to] to get rid of Trump, I’m willing to do it.”
Another top Biden adviser put it this way: “He’s going into this thinking, ‘I want to find a running mate I can turn things over to after four years but if that’s not possible or doesn’t happen then I’ll run for reelection.’ But he’s not going to publicly make a one term pledge.”
Fast forward to this week, and after both Biden and his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris “accidentally” referred to a Biden-Harris administration as the “Harris administration”, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has added more fuel to the fire by suggesting she believes far leftists “can likely push” Biden “in a more progressive direction”:
“I think, overall, we can likely push Vice President Biden in a more progressive direction across policy issues,” she told Just the News in an interview Tuesday on Capitol Hill. “I think foreign policy is an enormous area where we can improve; immigration is another one. There are some areas where we just fundamentally disagree, but that’s okay. I think it’s important to acknowledge that we can have, in some cases, very large disagreements — it doesn’t mean that we’re trying to undermine the party or undermine each other. It means that we’re trying to do what’s best for people in the country.”

The Trump campaign took notice, and responded accordingly:
Far-left radical AOC says she can “push Vice President Biden in a more progressive direction across policy issues.”

In addition to speculation about Biden only serving one term in order to pave the way and make it easier for someone more progressive to follow, there’s also been no shortage of discussions on social media about the possibility that Biden will step down during his first term rather serve it in full.
While there’s no way to know for sure, the campaign’s tendency to keep him sequestered in the basement as often as possible in order to avoid the disastrous rambling that often happens during his public appearances when he goes off-script only fans the flames of the “resign” rumors.
