Cancel Culture, Biden-style. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre urged the Atlanta Braves to have a “conversation” about a new team name on Monday, the same day Joe Biden hosted the team to celebrate their 2021 World Series championship. Another “can’t make it up; don’t have to.”
The whole thing began when a reporter asked KJP about Biden’s position on the “tomahawk chop,” which Donald Trump did with Braves fans at the World Series. (It’s called enjoying a baseball game.)
As reported by The New York Post, Jennifer Jacobs of Bloomberg News asked Jean-Pierre at her regular briefing about Biden’s position on the Braves’ team name as well as the controversial cheer. KJP being KJP, here’s how she responded:
We believe that it’s important to have this conversation, you know, and Native American and indigenous voices, they should be at the center of this conversation.
That is something that the president believes, that is something this administration believes, and he has consistently emphasized that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
You hear that often from this president. The same is true here. And we should listen to Native American and indigenous people who are the most impacted by this
Uh-huh, KJP — you mean the same way nine out of ten Native Americans who weren’t offended by the Washington Redskins name were listened to, KJP? But team owners bowed to silly (and dangerous) cancel culture and changed the iconic name, anyway? First, to the ridiculous Washington Football Team, then to the equally-ridiculous and meaningless Washington Gladiators? Please.
As I mentioned at the top, Biden apparently had no reservations about saying the team’s (“racist”) name multiple times during a celebration in the White House East Room. Moreover, he noted that the team name “Braves” dates back more than 100 years when the Boston Rustlers became the Boston Braves in 1912. The Braves moved from Boston to Milwaukee in 1953 and to Atlanta in 1966.
“The Braves will be forever remembered for the unstoppable, joyful run that this team made last year,” Biden beamed. Not quite, according to the ever-inept White House press secretary, Jean-Pierre, who just hours later “encouraged” the Braves to have a “conversation” about tossing the venerable team name into the dustbin of history, alongside those of the RedSkins and Cleveland Indians.
The Bottom Line
Incidentally? As was the case with the vast majority of Native American opinions about the Washington Redskins, MLB Commissioner Major Rob Manfred said last year that Native Americans support the Braves name. But, hey — so what?
While just one-in-four Hispanics have heard the made-up “Latinx” name, just three percent use it, mostly young Hispanic women, or woke, politically-correct liberals like Michelle Obama. The Obama Foundation; is all over it like it’s going out of style. Um, Mooch? “Latinx” never was in style.
I’m a Cubs fan, but I’ll do the tomahawk chop like a champ the next time I see a Braves game in Atlanta. Unless they’re playing my Cubbies.
