Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., told Newsmax that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg wants to receive as much attention as he can by pursuing former President Donald Trump, and the attempted prosecution is “politically motivated.”
The former president said he expects to be arrested and indicted by the grand jury on Tuesday, centering around the alleged $130,000 hush money payment to former adult film star Stormy Daniels shortly before Election Day in the 2016 presidential campaign over an alleged affair, which Trump has denied.
“It’s a politically motivated attempted prosecution,” Rep. Tenney told Newsmax on Monday’s “National Report.”
“It’s malicious prosecution, actually, because it’s an abuse of power. It’s an attempt of Bragg to use his power as a district attorney to go after President Trump or, you know, exploiting the best headlines you can get.”
Tenney said to Newsmax: “I mean, you have to look at this case honestly. Donald Trump was sued by Stormy Daniels over this alleged, you know, defamation and payment, an incredibly and really just very unusual turn of events. The court ordered Stormy Daniels to pay $300,000 in legal fees to Donald Trump over the case that she lost. That’s incredible. That doesn’t happen in our U.S. system and very rarely. So you know, this case is garbage.
“You know, it’s not going anywhere, but it’s really you know about going after President Trump inciting, uh, you know, more media attacks of him and God knows what they want to do.”
Tenney continued: “I don’t know what the ultimate goal is because I can’t read into the minds of the far left. But they are obsessed with Donald Trump. They have Trump derangement syndrome. And this is what’s happening, and it’s and I think, and I agree that Alvin Bragg should have been fired by Kathy Hochul. Lee Zelden ran for governor, and he said his first act in office would be to fire Alvin Bragg for a failure to live up to his oath of office.”
Bragg can still be removed by Gov. Hochul, Tenney said. “He is not prosecuting violent crimes, but he has time to use taxpayer resources to go after the former president. It’s really the worst of our system on display here and it’s unfortunate, but I think this is all going to blow over because I don’t see any way that they’re actually going to get Donald Trump to appear in court for an indictment or any type of charge, So I think again. This is grandstanding.”
Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen testified over two days last week before the panel in Manhattan Criminal Court, and Daniels spoke with prosecutors via Zoom.
Cohen has admitted to giving Daniels $130,000 to keep her quiet about her claims of having had sex with Trump on one occasion years before the election, CNBC reported.
The investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is examining how Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, classified the payment and reimbursement to Cohen as legal expenses.
