Sen. Johnson Blasts FBI For Undermining Hunter Biden Probe

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., wrote a letter demanding the DOJ open an investigation into potential political targeting from the FBI upon hearing whistleblower claims the FBI actively worked to protect Hunter Biden amidst Johnson’s investigations into him.

The letter, addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Chris Wray, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, and DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz, expressed serious concerns that the FBI “intentionally discredit[ed]” Johnson and Sen. Chuck Grassley’s investigations into Hunter Biden’s shady foreign entanglements.

Johnson referenced a previous letter in which Grassley alleged “there was a scheme in place among certain FBI officials to undermine derogatory information connected to Hunter Biden by falsely suggesting it was disinformation,” according to whistleblower reports.

On Aug. 6, 2020, the FBI briefed Johnson while he was conducting his own investigation into Biden. He said the information provided to him in the briefing was vague, unrelated to his investigation, and intended to discredit his work looking into Biden.

“If these recent whistleblower revelations are true, it would strongly suggest that the FBI’s August 6, 2020 briefing was indeed a targeted effort to intentionally undermine a Congressional investigation,” Johnson said in his letter. “The FBI being weaponized against two sitting chairmen of U.S. Senate committees with constitutional oversight responsibilities would be one of the greatest episodes of Executive Branch corruption in American history.”

Johnson and Grassley had previously requested in 2021 that the DOJ “begin an immediate review and investigation relating to the Justice Department’s and FBI’s process and procedure to prepare for and provide defensive and counterintelligence briefings with particular emphasis on the August 6, 2020 briefing,” but their request was left unmet. The FBI has refused to explain to Grassley and Johnson the purpose of the briefing and who was behind it.

“If the OIG is unwilling or unable to conduct an investigation into the potential political targeting of U.S. Senators by federal law enforcement entities, then the appointment of a Special Counsel would be fully justified and long overdue,” Johnson concluded.
