Sen. Schumer: Voting for Barrett Means Eliminating Healthcare

Within minutes after President Donald Trump named Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his pick to succeed late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY., posted a statement saying he will strongly oppose her nomination and warned she will endanger the Affordable Care Act and women’s rights.

Schumer tweeted, along with a link to the statement:

“A vote for Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a vote to eliminate healthcare for millions in the middle of a pandemic. Democrats are fighting for Americans’ healthcare.”

In his statement, Schumer said, by nominating Barrett, Trump has put Americans’ healthcare “in the crosshairs”:

“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage, unabated by this administration, healthcare was already the number one issue on the ballot in November. President Trump has promised to nominate Supreme Court Justices who will ‘terminate’ our healthcare law and decimate the healthcare system for American Indians and Alaska Natives. In Judge Barrett, President Trump has found the deciding vote.”

Barrett has strongly criticized the ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act, noted Schumer, claiming, if the Supreme Court had read the law as she did, they would have had to “invalidate” all of it.

Barrett’s record also “makes it clear” if she is confirmed, “the reproductive freedoms that millions of women hold dear would be in grave danger,” Schumer’s statement added.

A far-right majority on the court could “also turn back the clock on women’s rights and a woman’s right to choose, workers’ rights, voting rights, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, environmental protections, and more,” Schumer said.

He added the future for DACA recipients “also hangs in the balance with this nominee.”

Schumer said he opposes the move by Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to push Barrett’s nomination through, despite Ginsburg’s “dying wish” not to be replaced until after a new president takes office.

“Republicans are poised to not only ignore her wishes, but to replace her with someone who could tear down everything that she built,” Schumer said. “This reprehensible power grab is a cynical attack on the legitimacy of the Court.”
