Congresswoman explains basic civics to clueless constituents demanding gun control – Bearing Arms

One of the biggest complaints from the far-left at the moment is that Democrats aren’t doing enough to push back or simply undo the Supreme Court’s decisions in Dobbs and Bruen, which respectively struck down the federal right to an abortion discovered by the Court in Roe v. Wade and upheld the right to bear arms in self-defense that’s found in the text of the Second Amendment to the Constitution. They’re still pushing to repeal the filibuster in the Senate in order to pack the Court full of progressive justices, even though everyone from Joe Biden to Joe Manchin have said the votes aren’t there to do so. They’re calling for impeaching Supreme Court justices, despite Dick Durbin throwing cold water on the idea.

They’re insisting on the impossible, in other words, and they won’t be satisfied until they get. New Mexico Democratic congresswoman Melanie Stansbury recently got a first-hand look at the mental and emotional state of the Democrats’ base of supporters a couple of days ago during a town hall, when she was confronted by passionate and devoted progressives who apparently have no idea how the federal government works in theory and in practice.

One caller said she would never vote for Democratic candidates again because she blamed the party for Roe v. Wade being overturned. The person said former President Barack Obama was to blame because he didn’t codify Roe v. Wade into law. So the longtime voter said she would vote for a write-in candidate in the future. Another caller said older Democrats had “checked out” of the political process because they were frustrated.

One caller asked Stansbury why members of Congress weren’t “bypassing” partisan gridlock to create more stringent gun control laws.

“Unfortunately, we can’t bypass Congress for passing legislation, because Congress is the body responsible for passing legislation,” she said.

When asked why Democrats in Congress weren’t simply adding more justices to the Supreme Court and imposing term limits on justices, Stansbury said such actions are not supported by the majority of Americans and would require much more “activism and political building.”

“Those are not exactly simple questions,” she said. “Unfortunately, it involves the way our country was founded and the constitution.”

Did these people never watch Schoolhouse Rock growing up? How on earth do you get to the point where you’re not only voting but are engaged enough with politics that you’ll take part in a town hall event with your congresscritter and still have no idea how a bill becomes a law?

Besides, its awfully amusing to blame “partisan gridlock” for the fact that most of the anti-gun items on Democrats’ to-do list aren’t moving through Congress when Joe Biden is “celebrating” the passage of the gun deal brokered by a group of Democrat and Republican senators. Democrats just did “something” with the help of a couple dozen Republicans, but that’s of no consequence whatsoever to the delusional lefties who joined Stansbury’s recent town hall.

To be fair, though, it’s not enough for most Democrats, who are still hoping to use gun control as an issue to blunt the expected Republican gains in Congress this fall. Later this month, the Senate Judiciary Committee chaired by Dick Durbin is expected to hold a hearing on the Highland Park Fourth of July shooting, and activists are hoping to use that event to pressure the Senate into approving a ban on so-called assault weapons.

Kitty Brandtner, 35, lives in Winnetka and is the mother of three young kids. She is a senior director at Lasalle Network, a recruiting firm. She quickly organized a group -— its name is “March Fourth” — a reference to taking action going forward.

As of Sunday night, there were 7,681 followers on the Instagram page of the group.

Earlier on Sunday, some 40 people — part of this new network — were on a Zoom call planning the “March Fourth Enough” event on Wednesday. I’m told that about $120,000 has been raised for travel expenses and some 500 are expected at the Capitol Hill rally at First Street N.E. and C Street N.E. It’s a block from the Capitol.

“I was tired of feeling helpless and trapped as an American citizen raising kids who aren’t safe in schools, at concerts, at parades,” Brandtner said in a statement. “I just wanted to stand together, scream at the top of our lungs and beg for real change.”

Leah Israel, a Democratic fundraiser and consultant who is a founding partner of Magnify Strategies — and a graduate of Highland Park High School — is helping organize meetings on Capitol Hill this week with members of Congress and Highland Park activists who will be in DC.

There are plenty of things that could be done to improve public safety without trying to criminalize tens of millions of legal gun owners and turn the right to keep and bear arms into a felony offense (I’d start with repeat and prolific offenders, personally) but the left is doubling down on its anti-gun crusade despite the fact that they don’t have the votes to put their gun ban plans into effect. And while the Supreme Court has given Second Amendment supporters invaluable legal ammunition in the court fights ahead, we can’t sit back and just assume that every case is going to go our way. We still need to be engaged in these political fights, because the gun prohibition lobby isn’t going to let a little thing like SCOTUS stop them from trying to legislative and litigate our rights away.
