Conservative Leaders Rail At J6 Committee As Partisan Show Trial

Dozens of prominent conservatives signed a memo on Monday railing at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Select Committee on Jan. 6 as a partisan show trial weaponized to seek retribution against political dissidents.

The letter, organized by the Conservative Action Project (CAP) with 79 signatures, condemns the committee’s pursuit of intrusive documents from private citizens and breach of House protocols and decorum.

“The records request,” they wrote, highlighting Chairman Bennie Thompson’s, D-Miss., demand that 35 companies preserve records from a designated hit list under seal, “which is supposedly related to the events of January 6th, for some reason goes all the way back to April 2020.”

“In short, Thompson issued a surveillance order for a secret list of people who haven’t necessarily done anything wrong, and who Democrats want to be prohibited from knowing that the intimate details of their digital lives are being harvested by Congress,” they wrote.

Signatories to the letter include former Attorney General Edwin Meese III, former Director of the Office of Management and Budget Russ Vought, and The Federalist’s own Rachel Bovard.

The memo demands the Department of Justice refuse charges against individuals indicted by the committee, including former Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Clark and former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

The coalition also outlined the redundancy of the Select Committee’s work following the completion of investigations from federal law enforcement which “found no evidence of any central coordination or organization” to provoke the riot.

“The actions of the January 6th Committee then, are clearly not in pursuit of a law enforcement or investigatory end — that work has already been completed and turned up nothing,” they wrote. “Instead, it is designed purely to prosecute a political agenda, to name and shame individuals who haven’t done anything criminal, but because they were remotely connected to President Trump or the event itself.”
